These were some of the questions that I asked my brother's roommate, George about the DD Perks User Experience. He is a freshman at Suffolk University and a player on the basketball team so I knew he was probably often grabbing food to go with apps like DD Perks. After researching, I am interested to see what a millennial college student has to say about the user experience of this mobile application.
Rosemary Fuhr, a friend of my grandmother's is 77 and new to the iPhone world. Although she still has some learning to do, she was ready and willing to try out the DD Perks app and see what she thought of it.
Alison Palo is a 38 year old mother of four who lives in my town. I wanted to make sure I was able to interview someone who is constantly on the go and uses this app to really see if it is more convenient.
Are you asked to create an account when you first open
the application?
the application?
It first asks to turn on my location services, then to accept their terms of use, then it walked me through the new features, then I was asked to create an account.
What kind of credentials does it ask for?
First name, last name, zip code, email, password, birthday
Does the app ask you if you’d like it to take you through a tour of each area of the app?
No, I was introduced to the new features but it did not take me to see any of them
Is it difficult to add money or a gift card?
No, I typed in the gift card number and pin number and then it asked me to select a picture so I can differentiate gift cards
What are the options for payment?
Yes, I can connect my debit or credit card and have it add a value every time I use all of the money
Is there anything confusing about the perks?
Yes, they are misleading and make you think that you’d have a bar code to be scanned in the store but you have to have your card scanned multiple times to earn the perk.
Is order on the go difficult to use?
No, it walked me through how to use it….A menu of all of the different options popped up, I selected donuts and bagels, it then condensed to donuts, munchkins and bagels, I selected donuts and it gave me a list of the flavors, let me select the quantity and told me the amount of calories, then it showed me the price for one glazed donut, —> a screen pops up asking me to “continue order” or “go to check out”
How is the checkout process?
Pick up location, what your order is and you are able to add more items at this point, the total, lets you use perks at this point, select payment
What do you think of the hamburger menu?
It’s easy to use
Why do you think it’s easy to use?
Because you just click it and it gives you all of the options to navigate around the application
Do you think it is a good way to budget your money?
No because it is easy to have them scan your phone over and over again and continually asks if you want to buy more
Do you think it is convenient being a college student?
Yes, because you can put all of your gift cards in one place and you don’t have to worry about carrying your money. It also offers you free beverages frequently which is also nice because college students are usually on a tight budget
Do you think the menu is helpful?
Yes, it is categorized well and informative as it tells the amount of calories for each flavor and size
Is it easy to contact DD Perks
You can email or call and it gives you the office hours so you can contact them whenever you’d like
Rosemary Fuhr, a friend of my grandmother's is 77 and new to the iPhone world. Although she still has some learning to do, she was ready and willing to try out the DD Perks app and see what she thought of it.
What is the first task you are asked to do when you open the app?
It shows me how to use certain parts of it, which I found helpful and then it asked me if I had an account or if I wanted to create one. I did not have one so I created one.
Once you created the account, where did it bring you next?
It took me to a page showing an empty coffee cup and then some information below it saying “Points, Offers, My Cards, Menu & Nutrition and Order-On-
The-Go.”
The-Go.”
Does the app ask you if you’d like it to take you through a tour of each area of the app?
It took me a minute to figure out what each box of information was for, but I did figure it out on my own with no help giving me any sort of tour. However I did find the small tour right when I first opened the app to be helpful and prepare me for how to use the rest of the app.
Is it difficult to add money or a gift card?
I added two gift cards that my daughter had given me for my birthday and even though it took me a minute to type in all of the numbers correctly, I did not find this part difficult.
Are there other options for payment?
You are able to enter your debit or credit card information but I find that to be dangerous. I don’t see any option to pay with cash.
What do you think of the perks?
Now I’m new to the iPhone in general, however it confused me that some of the perks had a bar code and some of them did not. Am I only allowed to use them at certain times?
What was your experience like with placing an order through
Order-On-The-Go?
Order-On-The-Go?
At first, I didn’t have trouble with this at all. There were large pictures indicating the different categories of food and drinks that I could pick from so I was easily able to find a hot coffee. However, after that it got very confusing for me and took close to 15 minutes for me to order. I could barely see the little button for quantity and completely skipped over that. Then I had a hard time reading all of the flavor shot buttons.
How is the checkout process?
I was rather confused on what I had to click for the cashier to be able to scan my perk. The girl was very sweet and helpful, but without her I would have had no idea what I was doing.
What do you think of the hamburger menu?
I had no idea what a hamburger menu was until I saw this one and you explained it to me. It is amazing how many more options are hidden under there!
Why don’t you think it’s easy to use?
I think there are too many though, it got overwhelming for me.
Do you think this app is a good way to budget your money?
I think it is a great way to keep track of my gift cards but I would not trust keeping my credit or debit card information on there.
Is this app easy to navigate?
Being one of the very first apps that I have used, I did think that it was on of the more difficult and rather confusing apps to navigate through. It has a great concept but is not executed very well.
Was this a good app to start with as a new iPhone user?
I think I may have had a better experience and been able to understand how to use this app a little more if I had been an iPhone user for a longer period of time, however I’m also a slow learner so you never know!
Alison Palo is a 38 year old mother of four who lives in my town. I wanted to make sure I was able to interview someone who is constantly on the go and uses this app to really see if it is more convenient.
What was your experience like when you first downloaded and opened the app?
I found it interesting how they walk you through how to use some of the features of the app. I have not really ever seen that in an app before and am not sure if it will end up being a good or bad thing.
Why do you think it could either be a good or a bad thing?
I think it is nice that they show you how to use the features and could definitely be helpful, but I’m not sure if they are giving the instructions because the app has so much to it that the user would need them. Having instructions be one of the first things I see when I open an app for the first time is already a little overwhelming to me.
After you created your account where did they take you next?
I was brought to what sort of seemed like a profile page where I can see my points, offers, cards and what seems like a few other features that I’m not really sure what they are quite yet.
What was it like to add money or a gift card?
I had a bunch of gift cards that I had collected up over my last few birthdays so I was excited to get those all organized into one place. I’m usually carting my four kids around so I usually end up just paying with cash to avoid trying to dig through my purse to find a gift card. I am a little hesitant to put my debit card number on this app but may add it once I get a little more used to it.
Do you think this app would be more convenient for you?
I don’t think it would be any more convenient for me than going into the store or through the drive-through and paying with cash. It seems way too complicated for what the idea is and is taking me way too long to find where I need to check out. I definitely love that I can pay with my phone though.
What do you think of the perks page?
They're not great. I'm also very confused on these too, not sure when I can and cannot use them.
They're not great. I'm also very confused on these too, not sure when I can and cannot use them.
How easily can you find your gift cards?
I find it very misleading that when I used up one of my gift cards it said I had $0.00 left when I knew I had money on other gift cards. All of the cards should be laid out next to each other with their current balances. I also think that the gift card should delete on its own when there is nothing left on it. This would make it much less confusing and much faster to find what I need when I’m crunched for time. I also love the idea of getting points that eventually lead to free beverages but I think there should be some sort of feature that still lets you earn points if you pay with cash.
How do you feel about the navigation of the app?
I think it’s very cluttered and could be extremely condensed. There are too many pages and too many unnecessary ways to get to the same place.
Do you feel that the hamburger menu is helpful?
I don’t think that it is necessary for this app. Again, I am looking for the fastest, easiest way to get to my checkout because I am always in a hurry and rushing to feed my kids on the go in the morning.
Can you find a way to re-order the same thing?
I do not see anything like that. I do think that the order history should be more prominent and maybe have a re-order button.
After taking in all of the information I gathered, I was able to turn each of these thoughts into an empathy map for each interviewee. I redesigned our empathy map template into a more aesthetically pleasing way for the eye to read and was able to split each thought into different categories: observations, feelings, needs, thinking, insights/problems, and ideas/solutions.
